Flanders Fields

We are taking part in the commemorations at St Mary Magdalen Church for the centenary of the end of World War 1 and our team is building a display for the central aisle of the Church. Please do take a look, all details are on the Church’s website, www.stmarymagdalen-tilehurst.org/flanders-field

Plant Stalls 2018
Our Plant Stalls this year have been hugely successful and thanks go to all of our members who have helped in any way, whether by supplying plants, by helping on the stall or with transport. Thanks also to those who grew the runner beans which were distributed at the AGM in February. We have enjoyed excellent weather, which has brought the customers out and our takings so far this year are in excess of £1500! A surplus of tomatoes has meant that we’ve held some pop-up sales at Gratwicke Road which has also gone down well with members. A special mention must be made of our Plant Stall at the RBH League of Friends’ Fete: we had a busy and very successful day. The weather was kind. Enormous thanks to all who donated plants and who helped on the day. Your efforts enabled us to take over £700, a record which we could not achieve without your plants. A regular event in our diary and customers return to us each year.

School Visit
In April, Churchend Academy paid a return visit to our Gratwicke Road Trading Shed with their reception classes. The visit supported their summer term topic “In the Garden”, and volunteers showed them how we sow seeds, tools and products we use and a variety of plants. There was also a display of birds’ nests and a wasps’ nest which caused much fascination! Many thanks to Christine Turner, Nigel Turner, John Wheeler, Lionel Little and Christine Imber who all assisted.

You will be aware that the new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) came into force on 25 May. In common with other organisations, we have reviewed our processes to ensure that the personal information we collect from members is handled and stored securely. We only use this data, normally Name, Address, Email Address, and sometimes Telephone Number, for the legitimate business of running the THA and never pass it to a third party. Our Privacy Statement is attached to this newsletter. If you have any concerns, please do let us know.

Dobies Group Seed Discount
We will be contacted by Dobies shortly to ask whether we wish to continue the discount scheme this year. Do you have any feedback and are you happy that we operate the scheme again? Please let us know your thoughts by emailing tilehurstha@gmail.com or talk to any Committee Member.

Trading Sheds
The change to opening hours at Oak Tree Road has shown some very positive results, with increased sales and several new members. We now open there on Saturday mornings which appears to suit members better. We have also trialled peat-free composts and comments received from members indicate that Sylva Grow peat-free compost, whilst more expensive, is of a much better quality and this is now in stock. Don’t forget, if you have any suggestions regarding the sheds or the products we stock, please let the Committee know.

The membership year is January to December. If you have not yet renewed your membership for 2018 you will receive a letter with this newsletter or an email separately will be sent. If you do not renew within the next few months, we will take it that you no longer wish to be a member. This will be the last newsletter you will receive unless membership is renewed by mid-September 2018.

Gardeners’ Roadshow
We changed the format of our May meeting this year and our evening had a Gardeners’ Roadshow theme. Special thanks to all our “experts” who played a part, including Lynne Jones, Margaret Finch, John Green, Claire O’Brien and Rod Cox. Rod gave us an impressive demonstration of how to exhibit “5 a Day in a Seed Tray”, one of our new classes at this year’s Summer Show.  Once again, we would welcome your comments.

Annual Summer Show 4 August 2018
Schedules are now available in both Trading Sheds and can be downloaded from our website, together with our “Hints and Tips” leaflet. If you were fortunate enough to win a trophy last year, please make sure it is returned to our Show Secretary at 69 Westwood Road by 22 July. All entry forms should be submitted to the Show Secretary by Sunday 29 July with the entry fee. There are some new items this year, including the “Potato in a Pot”, where we all look forward to seeing the results of those potatoes purchased at our AGM. Visitors will also have the opportunity to vote for their “Best in Show” with a People’s Choice award.  As usual we would be grateful to receive donations of plants for the plant stall and cakes for refreshments. These can be brought to the Tilehurst Village Hall on the evening of Friday 3 August or on the Show morning. If you can help in any way on the day, please contact our Show Secretary, Claire O’Brien, on show.tilehurstha@gmail.com or on 07903269554.
