Membership – Renewal Reminder

The membership year is January to December, so the 2019 membership fee is now due. You can pay at the Trading Sheds and at the Talks. May we please ask you to ensure that we have your e-mail address so that the Newsletter and other information can be e-mailed. We can, of course, continue to deliver a paper copy of the newsletter if you wish. Last year we organised two trips at quite short notice after the Newsletter had been distributed so we were only able to contact those who were on e-mail.

AGM 14 February at 7:30 p.m.

After the formal business of the Annual General Meeting we will once again be having a social event which will include wine and nibbles and an informal quiz.

THA Trips

We are planning to repeat our trip to RHS Wisley this year. As an Affiliated Society we can receive a free visit for 55 members each year. We will aim to give priority to those members who were not able to go in 2018, so watch this space for further information.
We also ran a very successful private group visit to a ‘National Gardens Society’ open garden last year and hope to visit a couple of gardens in 2019.

Englefield Visit

About 30 members enjoyed a very interesting evening visit to Englefield Garden Centre in September. The Garden Centre Manager, Austin Crabbe, showed us round and explained how they work with the Affinity Trust, supporting adults with learning disabilities. They provide employment for several people who help to grow and sell the plants in the nursery. They also run workshops to enable support on a daily or weekly basis. We enjoyed tea and coffee and Austin, assisted by member Cat Wood, demonstrated how to make up a container for autumn through to spring. Finally, members were able to shop, taking advantage of the 10% discount on plants and seeds offered by Englefield to our members.

Trading Shed Rotas

Many thanks to Nigel Turner, who, after 4 years, has decided to retire from organising the trading shed rotas. Thanks also to Judith Buckingham, who had agreed to take over this duty for future years. Nigel & Judith have worked together to produce the rotas for 2019. If you are a helper or a cashier at either shed, but find you are unable to carry out your allocated duty, please note that it is your responsibility to arrange a replacement, by swapping with another volunteer on the list.

THA Website

Do you have experience of building or designing websites? We would love to hear from you if you could spare some time to help us improve our THA website. We are also considering taking payments online for items such as Membership fees and Show entries. Any assistance or guidance you could give would be appreciated!

Plant Stalls

Once again we are planning to run our successful plant stalls in 2019. Beanpole Day is Saturday 13 April 2019 at Caversham Court Gardens. Royal Berkshire Hospital League of Friends Fete is Saturday 8 June 2019. We are intending to repeat the event at the Discovery Centre, Thatcham, expected to be the weekend of the Spring Bank Holiday, 4-6 May, but exact date to be confirmed. In addition to volunteers to staff the stalls, help with transport is also welcomed. Clearly, if we do not have any plants to sell we can’t have the stalls so please think of us when you are planting, pricking out, potting on or taking cuttings.

Annual Show 3 August 2019

I am writing this with cold rain lashing the house and thought it worthwhile to remind us all that the days are lengthening and now is the time to start to plan your entries into the Annual Show in August.

The success of the Show depends on a number of factors all coming together one of which is the exhibits. So remember -
